Message From The Chief

The Division of Adult Cardiothoracic Surgery is comprised of four clinical programs in Cardiac Surgery, General Thoracic Surgery, Heart Transplantation and Lung Transplantation. While our Thoracic team leads the multidisciplinary Thoracic Oncology Program based at UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center at Mt. Zion campus, our Cardiac team is also serving important leadership roles at the UCSF Heart and Vascular Center, Intensive Critical Care Service Units at UCSF Helen Diller Medical Center at Parnassus Heights.

Serving the San Francisco Bay Area communities, the Cardiothoracic faculty and staff are proud to provide exceptional services for our patients at UCSF Parnassus Heights, Mt. Zion, Mission Bay campuses, San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center (SFVAMC), Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital (ZSFG), St. Mary's Hospital, Sequoia Hospital, and Washington Hospital. Our reputation for excellence in the clinical setting, stellar outcomes, and dedication to providing concierge customer service, informs our patients' decisions to come to UCSF. 

Training the World's Future Leaders

Training the leaders of the next generation, the Division has a prestigious Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accredited residency program in Thoracic surgery. This consists of rotations in Adult Cardiac Surgery, Pediatric Cardiac Surgery, Thoracic Surgery and Oncology, Advance Heart Failure, and Lung Transplantation. Our graduates are hired by top academic institutions and organizations nationwide.

Innovation and Discovery Realized

Our commitment to research and discovery in areas such as heart failure and lung cancer, is best evidenced within our Cardiac Biomechanics, Cardiothoracic Translational Research, and Thoracic Oncology Laboratories. The Cardiothoracic Surgery Division is proud to work with our industry partners as well as the National Institutes of Health in seeking to translate clinical discoveries into the practice setting where such work is truly meaningful.
